Tudor Submariner 7016 Black 'First Shield' Dial, lollipop seconds hand
Serial: 742854
Circa: 1970
Reference: 7016/0

DIAL: Black matte dial with tritium hour markers, long hash minutes, silver mercedes hour hand, pencil minutes hand and lollipop seconds hand.

CASE: 40mm, strainless steel case with black 60-min rotating diver bezel. Glass in acrylic

MOVEMENT: ETA 2483, automatic, 25 jewels

BRACELET: Rolex/Tudor stainless steel folded Oyster fliplock bracelet 9315/280 code G

CONDITION REPORT: The dial has signs of aging with the hour markers having aged with pumpkin patina. There are a couple minute aging spots on the dial, but overall very nice and untouched. The case appears worn, but unpolished with its original insert having a few nicks and scratches on it. The last digit of the serial number is difficult to read due to some pitting between the lugs, but we were able to make it out. The bracelet is original, but the clasp appears to have been replaced at some point.

NOTES: Following the Submariner reference 7928, Tudor introduced the next generation of Submariners with the launch of reference 7016. Produced over a span of seven years, the 7016 marked a period of significant evolution for the brand. Key developments during this era included the transition to ETA-supplied movements, the eventual addition of a date function in reference 7021, and the introduction of several new dial designs.

The reference 7016 was powered by the ETA caliber 2483, a reliable 25-jewel automatic movement. In the earliest years of its production, multiple dial variations appeared almost simultaneously, making this reference particularly interesting to collectors.

Three main dial types were produced for the 7016, each with its own distinct subcategories: the Rose, the Shield, and the Snowflake.

Rose Dial: The earliest version of the 7016 featured a dial nearly identical to the final iteration of the 7928, retaining the Tudor rose logo. This variant was produced in the first quarter of 1968.

Shield Dial: This was the first Tudor Submariner to display the brand’s modern shield logo, signaling a shift in Tudor’s visual identity. This dial variant appears to have been produced only around 1970 and is found within an approximate serial range of 74x,xxx.

Snowflake Dial: Later in the production cycle, Tudor introduced the now-iconic Snowflake dial, characterized by its square hour markers and unique angular hands.
