In order to cope with the rise in electromagnetic fields in the workplace and the need for a watch that would remain precise in these conditions, Rolex released the Oyster Perpetual Chronometer MILGAUSS Ref. 6541 in the mid 1950’s. This model resembled the Submariner and had a rotating bezel.
The Milgauss could still work normally when the electromagnetism was up to 1000 Gauss, therefore its name. The name is a combination of the words mille (1000) and Gauss, which is the unit of measurement of a magnetic field. It is named after German mathematician and physicist Carl Friedrich Gauss.
In 1960, the second generation of Milgauss, Oyster Perpetual Milgauss Ref. 1019, was officially unveiled with a smooth bezel, no longer the rotating one and the hour markers were changed into rectangular metal markers, the second hand also gave up Lightening Bolt and used linear hand, but it still had a red arrow. The case diameter of 1019 Milgauss was 38mm, not only 1019 Milgauss could be anti-magnetic to 1000 Gauss, but it was also water resistant to 50m. Milgauss 1019 was discontinued in the late 80's, which marked the end of production of the Milgauss series for several decades to come.
