DIAL: Black matte ‘Explorer’ dial with 3-6-9 and baton luminous hour markers. Tiffany & Co. signature on the dial.
MOVEMENT: Caliber 1570, self-winding mechanical movement with 26 jewels
CASE: 36mm, stainless steel with smooth bezel, acrylic glass
BRACLET: Stainless Steel Rolex USA (C+I) Oyster rivet bracelet dated 74
CONDITION REPORT: Mint condition, the dial is stunning with rich patina on the indexes. The case is unpolished. The lightly engraved stock number 16882 on the back of the lug is still visible and untouched. The bracelet matches as well. Crystal was cracked when we received it so we replaced it with a TrueDome.
NOTES: This particular watch comes indirectly through the grandson of the original owner. The original owner was a watch collector, focused on Patek Philippe and a loyal client of Tiffany & Co in New York. He also had a passion for hunting and going to Africa for big game hunting. He did not feel confident wearing a Patek Philippe on these hunts and therefore requested a more robust watch from Tiffany & Co. The result being this Rolex Explorer 1016, which is why it carries the Tiffany & Co signature on the dial. It remained in a drawer for decades until the son of the original found it and gave it to his son, a photographer that wanted to sell it to buy new camera equipment. Needless to say, he could afford to buy the top of the line cameras with the amount he received for the watch.
Tiffany & Co. signed dials became highly sought after almost immediately after Rolex stopped being retailed through their shops in the early 1990's. The already sought after 1016 in such excellent condition with the Tiffany signature is a grail among collectors today.
The watch comes with the original Ad from the 1970's for the Tiffany & Co signed Rolex 1016 with the same dial and rivet bracelet.
