NOTES:
In 1963, Rolex released the Cosmograph watch to measure and record elapsed time beginning with the reference 6239. This reference did not yet carry the name Daytona. It was powered by a Valjoux 72B manual wind column wheel chronograph movement, which Rolex reworked and improved internally. The watch had a tachymeter bezel and was fitted with pump pushers. Soon after, the introduction of the name Daytona was often seen on Rolex chronographs. This name came from the beach town in Florida, USA, where the famous Daytona race took place every year.
The reference 6263 was the successor to the 6240, the first Oyster reference with screw pushers in 1965 and first to be fitted with the black bakelite tachyemeter bezel instead of steel. The 6240 was discontinued around 1969 and the 6263 reigned for almost 20 years before all manual wind Daytonas were transitioned out in 1987 in favor of the larger automatic models.
