The collection name Huitième (or 8th) first appeared in 1988 in the catalog. It referred to the automatic 14593 reference. There were however older models with the same aesthetic, notably the 25644 automatic chronograph launched in 1986, that had the Audemars Piguet name engraved on the bezel at 12 o'clock. In order to rationalize these models into one collection, they became called Huitieme. The perpetual calendar version was launched in 1993. The first in this line was in fact the 25644 chronograph launched in 1986 and was the first automatic chronograph ever offered by Audemars Piguet. It was fitted with the 2126 caliber, which was later introduced, in 1993, on the Royal Oak line with the reference 25721. According to AP records, the Huitieme collection was officially introduced under this name in 1988 and was specially designed for the demand of the Italian market. Further research by AP also mentions, this collection was presented to all the Italian retailers in 1988 on the Amalfi coast in the presence of AP directors Steve Urquhart and Geroges-Henry Meylan as well as designer Jacqueline Dimier. The precise reason why it was called Huitieme is unclear, but there is a mention that it was already being called this way by collectors when the name was adopted by AP in 1988.
